Spider veins are small clusters of red, blue or purple veins that appear on the calves, thighs and ankles. They usually occur as people age, but in some people spider veins may appear at a young age. No matter what age they appear unsightly spider veins can be a cause of embarrassment and concern, leading to lifestyle or wardrobe changes.

Until recently, sclerotherapy, which involves injecting chemical agents into the vein to cause it to disappear over time, was the primary and preferred treatment for spider veins. While the chemical agents in sclerotherapy have proven to be effective, new advances in spider vein removal have given way to an innovative treatment called CLaCS, which has improved results. In this blog post, I discuss this treatment.

CLaCS (Cryo Laser Cryo Sclerotherapy) combines sclerotherapy with laser technology to produce the most successful results in vanquishing unsightly spider veins and other prominent veins. To begin, I use a mobile imaging system called the Vein Viewer that uses infrared sensing to image veins beneath the skin. The term “augmented reality” can be applied to this technology. The feeder veins supplying the spider vein clusters are attacked first with a transdermal laser. Next, the spider veins are treated with the transdermal laser. If present, the feeder veins are treated first and then the spider veins. The skin is left undamaged, as the energy of the laser is only absorbed by the blood vessels, i.e. the feeder veins and the spider veins. The feeder veins and the spider veins are then injected with a chemical sclerosant. These processes cause damage to the blood vessels, which usually clot. The body then safely absorbs the damaged blood vessels. Then over time, the treated blood vessels disappear.

Throughout the treatment, a cryo unit is used to cool the skin to eliminate the majority of discomfort. Most patients experience little discomfort from the treatment, and those who are sensitive may have a skin numbing cream applied about an hour prior to the treatment.

As an added benefit, recovery from CLaCS is safe and requires no downtime. Most of our patients are able to return to work immediately after the treatment and can exercise as soon as the following day. Unlike with sclerotherapy, compression stockings do not have to be worn.

The results of CLaCS have been so effective that I have begun to use it as the premier treatment for patients who are embarrassed or concerned by unsightly spider veins.
